My Story: The Shift That Changed My Practice

Hi, I’m Dr. KC — a psychiatrist based in Hong Kong. As a psychiatrist who prescribes medication and does psychotherapy, I’ve seen pills save lives. But I’ve also sat with people who still felt lost despite “stable” on chart.

Too often, mental health care stops at the diagnosis. You become “the depressed one” or “the anxious one”. And treatment becomes about reducing symptoms, not building a life.

That disconnect between a “stable patient” and a “struggle person” is why I started this blog and fundamentally changed how I work.

Here’re a few of my core beliefs:

Medication can be a bridge, not a destination. It can create calm waters so you can learn to swim.

Your greatest challenges are often linked to your deepest strengths. What looks like “distractibility” can be a curious, connective mind. What feels like “overwhelm” can signal a profound capacity for depth.

Well-being is about building a life, not just treating a condition. It’s about creating an environment--  in your work, relationships, and mind-- where you can thrive, not just survive.

Through this blog, I’ll share my ongoing journey – the conversations that humble me, the scientific insights that excite me, and my growing conviction that we must look beyond the diagnosis to see the whole person.

Think of this as an invitation. An invitation to question the old narratives, to explore what it means to be well on your own terms, and to discover the strengths already within you.

Welcome! I’m glad you’re here.
